Work Package #6
Project Management
D6.1 Web portal structure and implementation
D6.2 Report on awareness and wider societal benefits
This deliverable concerns the assessment of public awareness and the broader societal benefits of Vertical Forests (VF) via a specially designed questionnaire, emphasizing their role in contemporary urban environments. Vertical Forests provide significant environmental advantages, including carbon sequestration, improved air quality, urban temperature regulation, and enhanced biodiversity. Beyond ecological impacts, they contribute to human well-being by offering restorative, visually enriching spaces that support mental health, community cohesion, and sustainable urban lifestyles.
The study identifies substantial gaps in public knowledge regarding these social and societal benefits of VFs. Awareness is influenced by factors such as media representation, educational initiatives, government advocacy, and the accessibility of VF, with knowledge often unevenly distributed across regions and socio-economic groups. Limited understanding of their multifunctional value may hinder broader adoption.
To address these gaps, the deliverable recommends strategic measures, including targeted educational programs, supportive policy frameworks, technical guidelines, and the promotion of successful real-world projects. By increasing public engagement and understanding, Vertical Forests can move beyond iconic aesthetics to become integral elements of resilient and inclusive urban development.
Ultimately, this analysis underlines the potential of Vertical Forests to harmonize ecological, social, and economic objectives. Enhancing awareness and demonstrating societal benefits are essential for fostering sustainable, healthy, and connected urban communities, aligning with the GREENERGY Project’s strategic objectives of transformative urban living.
